How to Read Welding Symbols?

Welding symbols are an essential part of every welder’s vocabulary. They are used to communicate the specific details of a welding joint, and they are found on nearly every welding drawing. While they may seem like a foreign language at first, with a little practice anyone can learn to read welding symbols.

There are three main elements to every welding symbol: the reference line, the arrow, and the symbol. The reference line is the base from which all other elements are drawn. It is usually perpendicular to the edge of the drawing.

The arrow points to the side of the joint that will be welded. And finally, the symbol provides information about the type of weld, electrode type and size, current type, etc.

Learning to interpret welding symbols can be challenging, but it is well worth the effort.
